When Your Dog Can’t Stand Being Without You

When I leave the house these days, my girls check me out to see which shoes I put on and which bag I grab, and when they realize that they’re not coming they simply sit back.

No sound, no mess when I get home, no big deal.

That might be normal and not worth mentioning to you but I’m super grateful because being able to come and go without worrying wasn’t my normal when I first had Leo.

The first time I had to leave him for a little while I came home to blood on the floor .. he’d frantically scratched the door and hurt his paw on a hinge.

I’d leave him alone as little as possible knowing that he’d be whining, banging against the door the entire time, knowing that I’d come home to his wet belly from peeing himself and at times a note from the neighbours spelling out exactly how many minutes he’d been struggling.

It took time, quite a bit of time, to find a way to help him settle enough to be by himself without stress. I wish I’d known then that there is help available.
