A Matter of Safety & Wellbeing

Today's Pawsome Human: Andy Hale - From Task to Care - Address Your Dog's Need for Safety and Watch Behaviour Change

I had no idea they were so different

Until I had more than one dog, I thought, ā€œDogs love meat. Dogs donā€™t like vegetables, etc.ā€

Little did I know that, just like humans, each dog has their likes, dislikes and preferences.

Leo would pull a face as if to say, ā€œKeep this sh!t away from me!!!ā€ when I offered him some broccoli or anything else green šŸ¤Ŗ

Cai used to LOVE banana and Greek yoghurt.

Hada and Lea eat pretty much anything that comes their way, although Hada isnā€™t fussed about melon.

What about your dog(s)? Hit reply and share their favourite food if you like.

One thing I discovered - fortunately - very soon after finding Leo is that kibble is far from being the best choice for my dogs.

You might remember me talking to Charlie Dice about that for her podcast:

If youā€™re wondering what to best feed your dog and/or how to transition from kibble to something more nutritious, youā€™ll love the upcoming LIVE Masterclass:

Beyond Kibble: Improve Your Dog's Health and Increase Their Lifespan Through Nutrition" with Charlie Dice

12th August, 5:30 pm Europe (4:30 pm UK, 11:30 am ET, 8:30 am PT)

(HERE is what time that is for you)

Charlie immersed herself into the world of canine nutrition after her own dog, a gorgeous Bernese Mountain dog had horrible digestive issues for months, without any of the vetā€™s recommendations offering any relief.

With her degree in Animal Science and Nutrition, she decided not to go to vet school for her sanity. The dogs are the kids, and she's obsessed with feeding and caring for them in a holistic way. Together with her husband Andrew, they enjoy farm life, traveling and making homemade dog food.

So she knows a thing or two about food šŸ˜›

If youā€™ve been to any of the previous LIVE masterclasses, you know that you have two ways to get your questions answered:

  1. Ask your question when you register (perfect if youā€™re not sure if you can make it to the live call), or

  2. Ask via chat during the live call (great if questions come up while talking to Charlie)

So, if youā€™re curious to learn more about canine nutrition ā€¦

This weekā€™s Pawsome Humans: Andy Hale - From Task to Care - Address Your Dog's Need for Safety and Watch Behaviour Change

This week I have the immense pleasure to bring Andy Hale to you. If you havenā€™t met him, I highly recommend you join his Facebook group (link below).

In this episode, he shares how his own experience with trauma experienced during childhood helped him see that

  • punishment might change behaviour

  • reinforcement might change behaviour

.. but if the underlying need for safety - physical and emotional - isnā€™t addressed, the change comes at a cost and is likely to crumble in a situation of stress.

Turns out, the same is true for dogs.

The need for safety drives everything, and a lot of the behaviours we are so keen to train our dogs out of are really our dogsā€™ attempt to communicate that their stress bucket is too full or they donā€™t feel safe.

What to do?

Andy suggests we switch ā€œfrom task to careā€ - a concept thatā€™s fascinating in its simplicity:

In the episode, Andy unpacks this approach in a way that will change the way you look at working with your dog.

On a serious note ..

I didn't really know how dogs are being used by abusers until I met Maya Badham.

Beyond being hurt themselves, they're often used as a lever to control and threaten the victim.

And if an abuse victim does try to escape the situation with their dogs (or cats) they have a much harder time finding a safe place to stay.

There is so much to raise our awareness to, and in this episode (full episode in the comments) Maya shares some of the many things to consider and watch out for.

Because we never know who'll need our help šŸ¾
